My Secrets for Being a Great Leader

Whether you are a manager, CEO, or employee, all of us are leaders in some way, shape, or form. Being in any position of power means that it’s important to master how to be a great leader. It means knowing how to lead by example, how to command respect, and how to effectively motivate and guide others.

In the past 10 years or so, so much research has been done on this topic, and lots of emphasis has been placed on positive leadership, meaning that those who employ inspiring and empowering tactics make the best leaders. Think about it: when have you felt the best at work? Likely it is when you are working under someone who is enthusiastic, passionate, genuine and energetic, someone who leads by example through hard work, honesty, and sincerity. So if you want to be a great leader, check out these tips.

Be Encouraging

No two people are the same, and thus all of your employees aren’t going to have the same strengths. A great leader knows how to get their employees to play to their strengths and encourages them to work hard and pursue what they love (and what they are good at). Followers need to be encouraged to express themselves through their work, and effective leaders know how to offer challenges that coincide with support in order to help employees achieve their goals. Think of this as a way to get others to stretch their limits without going overboard or expecting too much.

Communicate Effectively

How can you expect someone to create great work if they don’t know what the expectations of them are? Effective communication is a vital quality of a great leader, because it means that everyone feels able to make contributions and receive recognition for their achievements. Clearly exchanging ideas and information is vital in ensuring that a company runs smoothly.

Set the Example

You can’t expect people to work hard for you if you don’t put in the work yourself. If you want people to dress smartly or show up on time, then you need to lead by example. This is because if you reprimand others for things that you yourself don’t exemplify, you won’t receive respect. Be a good role model by setting a high bar for yourself and others will follow.

Keep A Positive Attitude

Having a positive attitude and looking for the good in situations causes others to feel and act the same way. When leaders are constantly negative, pessimistic, or discouraged, this breeds a negative work environment, one where others feel it’s okay to be unenthusiastic and cynical also. On the other hand, a positive environment reinforces engagement and a more productive workforce. If you want positive results, keep a positive attitude.

Lead with Character

While company values and clear expectations are important, being a person of good character is equally as important because it’s what keeps your actions and words in line with your beliefs. People want a leader that they can look up to and trust. Being a character leader means having integrity as well as being trustworthy, open, and accountable. A great leader can be trusted to do the right thing, be open to other ideas, and be accountable to both themselves and others.

Listen

Just because you’re a leader doesn’t mean you always know the right answer or best solution. Great leaders know how to sometimes take a back seat and listen to others; both about any issues that may arise as well as how to better your business. Being heard correlates to feeling valued, and there is no greater feeling you can give an employee than knowing they have value.

Great leaders make a HUGE difference in business — they are the people you enjoy working for and who have clear boundaries and expectations that make you want to succeed. Being a great leader means having a positive impact on those around you.

Love yourself - it’s the best love you will ever have.
