The Power of Habit: Turning Goals into Reality
/All of us have dreams, goals, and aspirations that we all want to fulfill at some point. This is because we all are looking to squeeze more out of life — maybe by earning more money, being healthier, having more free time, or looking our best. Most of us take a vow every January to finally commit to these goals and accomplish the things we’ve always wanted… but how many of us actually complete those goals?
There is a difference between those of us who *say* we will make a change and those of us who actually get down in the dirt and get to it. Don’t you wanna be apart of the latter group? Well if you can learn to harness the power of habit, you will be able to turn your dreams into a reality.
First and foremost, you will never achieve anything unless your daily habits support them. For example, if one of your goals has been to try to have more down time at the end of the day, you have to create habits that reflect that desire.
When trying to decide what your goals are, figure out which habits would enable you to actually become successful. These are daily disciplines that you are always committed to, that never waver even when things get busy or better plans come up. This is the difference between being interested and being committed — when you are committed, no excuse or reason will stand in your way.
Be specific
Most often, people fail at implementing their goals because they have lofty ideas of what they want without ever figuring out how they plan to make it work. In order to have more time at the end of the day, maybe get to work a bit earlier, spend less time on social media, or keep on top of clutter so that you’re not scrambling at the end of the day to finish it all.
Similarly, if your goal is to drop 10 pounds but you never eat healthy or exercise, your habits of eating fast food on the couch aren’t supporting your goal. On the other hand, if you plan ahead to buy healthy groceries and take the time to cook meals and carve out time to exercise, these are habits that support your goals. Writing “exercise tomorrow” in your day planner isn’t making a habit, but signing up for an exercise at a certain time or making your lunch the night before are better examples.
Once you get comfortable with your main goal-supporting habits,
develop secondary ones as well.
This is another important aspect of turning goals into habits that will steer you in the right direction. So, if you’re looking to save more money for the future, putting a certain amount of money away monthly would be a main habit but also committing to eating out less or making your morning coffee at home are other habits that support your end goal as well.
Most importantly, your goals and daily habits shouldn’t feel like a terrible chore, but should feel fulfilling and exciting. Find ways to reward yourself for each small milestone, and understand the power of habit in making your dreams become a reality.
Love yourself - it’s the best love you will ever have.
