People ask me all the time what it’s like to be a woman in business… Well to be honest, it takes smarts, guts, and a whole lotta courage. It doesn’t mean I have no fears, but means that I’ve learned that in order to fulfill my wildest dreams, I have had to push past all my insecurities. While there is lots of chatter that women in business have it harder, I’ve found having my own business to be extremely empowering, and it has guided me on such an amazing adventure. Women are bada**, and we can take over the world — we are masters at juggling work, families, and responsibilities all while being able to support others and find the time to still get everything done.

Here are my 4 golden rules to making it as a female entrepreneur:

Don’t Wait

If you think you’re going to wait until you’re ready to pursue your dreams, then you will be waiting forever. Whether it’s going for that promotion, starting your own business, or training to run a marathon, you will never feel 100% ready to go. Don’t wait — instead seize the moment and just go for it. In fact, I bet if you took a stock of some of your greatest accomplishments, most of them involved you pushing past fear and just seizing the moment.

Be Courageous

Having courage is one of the most important aspects of being a woman in business, because there are so many different circumstances that require this ability in order to be successful. Courage does not mean being fearless, but being able to push past any and all fears in order to do what is best. Whether it’s asking for more resources at work, taking a risk, or asking for help, we all have to face circumstances that are scary or daunting, especially when we can’t control the outcome. But those women who have mastered this skill are the ones that best know how to be brave and ask for what they want.

Be Patient

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your ultimate goals won’t be completed in 24 hours either. The little steps that you take every day to achieve your goal are what will build your confidence and ability in order to help you reach you end goal. But don’t try to do it all at once; instead focus on one or two improvements at a time. If you’re trying to build your own business, focus on improving your social media or writing more blog posts. Once you’ve mastered that, move onto another area of your business — then keep shifting and improving. Setbacks are a natural result of this process, and your ability to tolerate disappointments, delays, and problems throughout this process is what will make you a successful woman in business.

Believe in Yourself

How can you expect to accomplish anything if you don’t have the confidence to know that you can (and will) succeed? A successful woman in business has a positive inner voice that reinforces her abilities and strengths. You must have complete trust in yourself and know that you are skilled and capable of whatever you want to accomplish. When you learn to rely on your experience and wisdom, you will become a more confident leader. Being an entrepreneur can be scary, lonely, and difficult at times, which is why it’s important to always believe in yourself. I promise you are more smart and capable than you believe.

Being a woman in business can be a difficult road, but turn the odds in your favor with these 4 tips and you will be well on your way to being a more powerful, confident, and courageous businesswoman.

Love yourself - it’s the best love you will ever have.
